Protecting our OS by Securing the Kernel

Recently some security software companies had heavily criticised Microsoft approached to secure Vista (see: Symantec critiques Vista security/ Windows defense handcuffs good guys). I can perfectly understand where their concerns were coming from.

Does every company out there especially Microsoft have the responsibility to continuously seek improvements and implement concrete measures to secure our products? Personally, I think so. Security has been one of our customer’s leading concerns with our products and Vista is our biggest investments in recent times. We and our partners had bet heavily on this product and we have to absolutely make it a quality release for our customers.

I think it is only fair that I also try to balance the argument with Kaspersky Lab’s assessment with our approach to PatchGuard . You can find out more about PatchGuard from here. Stephen Toulouse, the product manager in the heat of the recent action had wrote a recent entry on his blog "It's time to stop misrepresenting Kernel..." clearing up some of FUD, some security companies are putting out there.
